U16 Boys Rugby team win Giles Shield

Congratulations to our U16 Boys' rugby team who won the Munster Giles Shield in a superb final against Scoil Mhuire gan Smál in Bruff RC.

Villiers were first to put scores on the board with two excellent tries - James Deegan and Scott Harvey crossed the line and conversions followed from the inform kicker Aodhan Keane. Villiers were in front by 12 at the end of the first half.

Scoil Mhuire gan Smál mounted a spirited challenge in the second half and scored two tries in quick succession to tie the game at 12 -12 with 10 minutes remaining.

Villiers continued to push forward and were awarded a penalty with 3 minutes to go. Aodhan Keane stepped up to strike the ball confidently over the bar to give Villiers the lead. Scoil Mhuire gan Smál pressed hard in the final few minutes but an excellent Villiers defence ensured no further scores.

A final score line of 15 -12 saw team captain Jack Hennessy accept the Giles Shield from competition organiser Mr. Tim Fennell.
A delighted Jack presented the Shield to Ms. Storey during Assembly and thanked their coach Mr. Sadleir and all team members who had put in many hours of training throughout the season.

Belgium Trip 2015

Thirteen students and three staff departed Villiers on Friday 27th March 2015 for Belgium.  In a packed schedule, the group would visit three countries in 3 days on a cross-curricular trip covering curricular areas including History, English, European Languages, Religion as well as Civics Social and Political Education.
After a relaxing walk around Brussels visiting sights such as the Grande Place and the Manneken Pis, the group enjoyed some Belgian waffles with chocolate in preparation for the days to come.
Saturday began with an early start as the group travelled to Ypres to meet our encyclopedic guide, Bob Findley to begin our World War I tour.  Sights included Vimy Ridge, Thiepval and Beaumont-Hamel and offered the group a fascinating, captivating and at times tragic, insight into the experiences of those who fought and died in World War I.
Sunday began with another early start as the group travelled to Amsterdam.  Despite the inhospitable weather, the group remained determined to make the most of their time and the visit included the Jewish Historical Museum, the Portuguese Synagogue before culminating in the Anne Frank House, a highlight of the trip for many.
Monday gave students the opportunity to indulge in more waffles and chocolate as they enjoyed some free time around Brussels before heading to the European Parliament.  There we were greeted by MEP Luke Flanagan who offered students an insight into the life of an MEP.  Our host, Roger, then showed us around the vast parliament buildings before ending our afternoon in the Plenary .  Students were treated to a wonderful  Q&A session regarding the workings of the European Institutions.   It was then time to take the return flight home to Dublin, just in time for the Easter Holidays, and time to catch up on some rest after a hectic, educational yet very enjoyable 4 days.

Senior Girls Hockey Cup Final

Well done to  the Senior Girls' Hockey Team who reached the Munster Final against St. Angelas Cork. Unfortunately we didn't bring home the cup this time and were defeated 2-1  in what was a very close game. Half time saw us level at 1-1 after a wonderful short corner strike from Meadhbh Scanlon and all to play for in the second half. St. Angelas however scored shortly after the start of the half and despite some very good attacking play we weren't able to narrow the gap.

Team captain Lisa Smyth thanked all the squad for their hard work and dedication throughout the year and had particular words of praise for the team coaches Ms. Peters and Ms. Ryan.
